"After a positive cabinet meeting on the 19th of December, where the council voted in favour of the transfer, we continue to positively move forward with reopening the leisure centre. We now have several key members of our leadership team in place. They, along with the board members are now working through all the process and policy documentation that are required by the council for handover.
While we would love to commit to a date, we remain unable to at this time. However, we are confident we will be open within the next 3 months. We appreciate all of your encouragement during this complex process, and we ask you remain patient and continue to support us. We hear how keen you are to get signed up our facilities and clubs, and we will be launching our sign-up process in a matter of weeks. Publishing timetables and full pricing for all the facilities in the new leisure centre is a top priority, so stay tuned for more updates coming soon."

Gateshead Active was founded by people committed to the sustainable reopening of Gateshead Leisure Centre through a Community Asset Transfer (CAT).
Gateshead Active comprises of the following directors, Robert Waugh, Billu Kakkar and Denise Robson, and (formerly) Simon Mcilwraith. We also have a wider committee, which includes Clive Wisby, Johnathan Klajn, Julie McCracken, Helen Gladstone, Mick Armstrong, Kevin Berry, Lynn, Wales, Ian Gray and David Vissenga.
See our team page for more information.
The initial business plan was developed alongside Social Enterprise Acumen and incorporated the views of local residents. The business plan was updated in collaboration with Right Directions, with feedback from Gateshead Council.
Gateshead Active is committed to balancing sustainability with community interests. Gateshead Active was founded as a limited company with charitable objectives but soon plans to achieve full charity status in early 2024.
We have successfully applied for substantial funding from various sources, including over £100k from the Swimming Pool Support Fund. We want to offer special thanks to all those who donated to our 2023 Crowd Funder. With special mention for Kaizen Karate Club and their significant fundraising efforts.
